Making a Compost Toilet
July 2023; We made a compost toilet for the house in January 2023 and have been using it since then and have advised and overseen the work on two more in the last few months. Advice is, don't 'overthink' it. It is simple and easy - honest. You need to make or buy a shed, we made ours. You need to construct a box that will hold the waste and take the toilet seat. Make this to suit, the height you want. The tricky and important bit is fitting the toilet seat (a jig saw would help) and the urine/solid separator. Instructions come with the latter which is an essential bit of inexpensive and easily available kit, but for men, make sure it is not too close to the seat (you have to sit down, think about it). With this in place the toilet will not smell. We use ashes to cover the shit (no other way of saying it), but you can use bark, sawdust, earth or leaves. From time to time you will have to lift the trug out and store it in a container, we use a good metal dustbin. Its not an awful job, so long as you have that separator in place, it doesn't smell and in no time it becomes compost. Advice is, to be super sure, not to use it as compost for a couple of years and to put round trees and bushes.
