Walking pilgrimage is a transformational process. The church is merely a focal point, a quiet place dedicated to the discovery of God. People have worshipped in the church for many many years and as such places they have a history in the quest for the 'other', the numen, the divine. Churches are the centre of the parish, they came first and were the reason the parish was established over 1000 years ago. Houses, fields, roads and administration were set up around them, it means the English and Welsh landscape is essentially a spiritual one. Every part of it is holy.
